The highest-warrant symbol in this cast, because Christ pairs them himself.
It is not good against evil. It is shrewdness plus innocence, held together, as a single instruction. Cleverness without innocence is manipulation. Innocence without shrewdness gets people hurt.
Neither animal is flattened here. The serpent is crafty in Genesis 3, lifted up and healing in Numbers 21, and typological in John 3. The dove carries the news that the judgment has ended in Genesis 8, and the Spirit descending in Matthew 3.
Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. — Matthew 10:16
The rule that never bends
One composition, never split. The serpent alone reads sinister and collapses into Genesis 3. The dove alone reads sentimental. Neither one alone is the verse.
