WWJD? IDK!!!

What WOULD Jesus do (WWJD)? In a world that seems so different from the one he walked more than 2,000 years ago, I sometimes ask this question… I often don’t arrive at a clear answer.

It’s not because Jesus has somehow changed between then and now (that is impossible, as Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever), but rather because today’s world feels so far removed from His. To many, this may cause them to conclude this question is no longer relevant, or that it’s somehow outdated—I firmly believe otherwise.

This question has never been MORE significant and useful. The power of this mindset, when properly understood and tailored to your cases, will guide and light your path, giving you wisdom, peace, and tangible courses of action that lead to ultimate success.

Jesus equipped us with tools, guidelines, and frameworks that extend and mirror Himself. Therefore, when we apply these teachings to our lives, we are actively answering the question, “What would Jesus do?”

And yet, although He left us with great instruction, there seems to be plenty of room for nuance in many of life’s biggest decisions. Usually, there are many responses to the same scenario, or no “exact” solution at all, and what our Lord would potentially have done becomes unclear. Amongst many good options, it comes down to “preference” rather than strictly right or wrong. When you realize “I don’t know” (IDK) what He might do, we still need to act, and do so wisely, so where do we turn from here?

Introducing your Board of Christ-Centered Directors, the system of five mentors, in addition to Jesus (the CEO), who sit at the table with you when life throws you a situation. These individuals may be alive or dead, real or fictitious, someone you know or someone you merely know about. In different seasons, their identities will vary, and the number will flex from time to time. But I have found that building a list of five contacts you mentally consult for life’s big decisions is radically helpful for making more informed, better, more meaningful choices.

Jesus is, of course, at this meeting, but as many of us can testify, He often speaks in whispers or in a particular form of deliberate silence. As such, I have found it is beneficial and tactical to form a trustworthy proxy, a tangible set of examples with which you can reference and compare more easily. At times, “What would my Mama do?” is a lot easier to process. Not because I’m suddenly ignoring the Lord, but because I already know my Mama filters through Christ in her decision-making. I believe it is essential to add Christ-minded mentors to this list, as this strategy is a tool to ultimately help us answer this question.

The beauty of this Board of Directors is that it extends into not just your faith but all aspects of your life. The five members are unique to you and your calling. They should be anchored to your dreams and, more importantly, your purpose. They may come from all walks of life; some might be artists, businessmen, or authors; others can be church leaders, parents, family, friends, or childhood teachers. Their popularity doesn’t matter; what matters is their relationship with God, their credibility in their field, as well as your trust in them and their thinking.

The hiring process is God’s Word. Let it be clear: this team we are building is centered around Christ and Him alone. This filter distinguishes us from “the rest of the world.”

That said, in today’s day and age, the “five people we spend the most time with” are creators, artists, or others online, individuals we’ve never met face to face. This is a tremendous advantage to us when leveraged correctly, as it puts experts right at our fingertips, their thinking a click away. It means that, at any time, we can refine our judgment with someone we actively trust and respect. Tangibly, this means thinking, “Oh, what would ‘so-and-so’ likely do in this scenario?”

When you begin to leverage this power, you will notice just how much more informed your decision-making becomes. It’s more calculated and long-term oriented. Why? Because you are now screening against a Board of Directors, each expert in their field, ideally and primarily Christ-oriented. At the end of this process, you will be one step closer to answering “What Would Jesus Do?”

When you don’t necessarily know exactly what Jesus might do, a good exercise is to ask yourself what one of His disciples would do. This thinking extends into other important decisions, and today’s framework outlines a useful method for increasing in wisdom and living a life in line with our purpose.

Ultimately, spending more time with Jesus, 1:1, is the best way to understand what He would do. If you have not yet established a direct relationship with Him, I invite you to consider doing so.

In the meantime, if you have never pondered who you’d place on your board, think about it carefully over this coming week. Who do you trust, and what do they represent in your life? But above all, ask how these people would help you become more Christlike… that’s all that matters anyway.
